Solidarity and Community Action
Volunteering through Music
As co-founder of Musicart Sarriá, as a teacher and artist, I have always believed and worked firmly in and for social and community action through music through different channels:
- pedagogy
- public concerts in Cultural Spaces, Civic Festivals, Festivals, etc.
- collaboration with NGOs, Care Entities, and Help in Action: charity concerts, accompaniment concerts, and support for the elderly.
The latter, Accompaniment for the Elderly, has been so important since the beginning of the life of our Music Workshop, that we assumed the commitment with a group of student volunteers (adolescents, youth, and adults) to periodically offer quality concerts to some Centers and Nursing Homes for the elderly in Barcelona.
The goal is to bring HAPPINESS with music to all these people who need joy, entertainment, and affection.
It has been scientifically proven with hundreds of studies from around the world that the power of music in all its aspects (listening, practicing, or therapeutic) has a great impact on the human brain. So powerful is the set of elements that make up music (rhythm, sound, intensity, and timbre) that it goes directly to the neuronal connection, and as a magical consequence, to the emotional.
We have been lucky enough to live “this magic” in all these years in our accompaniment sessions, with our small recitals and concerts, seeing how the eyes of the elderly (most with dementia or Alzheimer’s) transform and are able to connect with the songs and pieces they recognize and even sing or hum them with us.
In recent years, we have set ourselves a new challenge: to establish a shorter frequency and, therefore, a more constant follow-up of this accompaniment.
In this beautiful way, we met CORAVIS, a non-profit association, whose objectives are:
- To brighten the daily life of the elderly.
- To accompany with empathy adapting to the abilities of each individual.
- To alleviate their loneliness and reaffirm them as valuable people.
- To collaborate communally in a network: associations, institutions, companies, and people.
In summary, to guarantee the WELL-BEING of our elderly.
Here is their website so you can find out about all the work they are offering with volunteers in the Elderly Centers and Residences.
We encourage you, therefore, young and adult students and families to be part of this wonderful project.
Each one of you is important!
