The Mermaid and the Friends of the Sea
Musical Tale – School and Family Show
With this story, we will learn and remember some of the most important values to learn during childhood: friendship, respect, generosity, effort, gratitude, bravery…
It is a story represented in a concert format, with dialogues between each character of the Sea and The Mermaid. Each character, a Friend of the Sea, represents a value, and through projected images, the script of the story, the music, and the lyrics of the songs, we will reaffirm these values until the end of the story. For the representation, we use real images of the sea and the seabed, as well as the marine animals that are protagonists of the story. In the theatrical-musical work, composed by Anna Martínez, we present a chamber trio: cello, flute, and voice, completing some songs with other instruments like the ukulele and percussion.

About the Project
We direct this work to children from 2/3 years to 10 years old, in school format or in family format with a subsequent workshop “What have we learned?”. The audience will be an important part of the performance, since in every GOODBYE of each of the Friends of the Sea, a characteristic interval will be sung. In addition, we will sing THE MUSIC LESSON (musical scale) and a participatory song which will be the MR. SHARK SONG, where everyone will sing with the musicians. The story, the script, the melodies, and the verbal and musical language that make up the entire work are designed so that the child, starting from 2/3 years old, can understand each of the problematic situations in which each character finds themselves and how they find the means to help solve them.
The main objectives of this Project within the Concert and with the Workshop are:
- TO FOSTER some of the most important behavioral values in the daily lives of our children, within the family and the surrounding environment: friendship, helping those in need, effort, patience, respect, sharing, being grateful, learning to participate in play, apologizing, asking for things politely, and bravery.
- TO SHOW these values through live performance, the story, and the songs.
- TO REFLECT on these values and internalize them with each song and through the supplementary worksheets of each character that will be worked on in the subsequent Workshop.
- TO PARTICIPATE actively, singing and interacting with musicians at some moments of the concert, becoming part of the story.
- TO RECOGNIZE each maritime image projected during the performance.
- TO KNOW live the different musical instruments that appear in the story and then work on them through supplementary worksheets (in class or in the Workshop).
*To work on the activity in classes before and after the concert, I will make the pedagogical dossier available to you with the lyrics of the songs, illustrated cards to associate each character with the value they represent, and musical instrument cards, as well as sheet music, audios, and videos of the participatory songs.
